Theme verse for this series:

1 Peter 3:15-16 [NLT] Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way.

Truth #6: THE ORDINANCES OF THE CHURCH

BAPTISM IN WATER
The ordinance of baptism by immersion is commanded in the Scriptures. All who repent and believe on Christ as Savior and Lord are to be baptized. Thus, they declare to the world that they have died with Christ and that they also have been raised with Him to walk in newness of life

Matthew 28:19 [NLT] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

HOLY COMMUNION
The Lord’s Supper, consisting of the elements—bread and the fruit of the vine—is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ, a memorial of His suffering and death, and a prophecy of His second coming, and is encouraged for all believers “till He comes!”

1 Corinthians 11:26 [NLT] For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

What does ordinance mean?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines ordinance as a prescribed usage, practice, or ceremony.

What is the difference between a sacrament and an ordinance?

A sacrament is a religious practice that one believes imparts a special benefit or blessing upon the one who practices it.

The Assemblies of God believe that these two practices are ordinances, not sacraments.
