The

of this Greek word (hagios) refers to something that has been or is being “set apart” or “ ”.

1) Christians have been “set apart” to God.
2) Christians are being increasingly “set apart” from sinful thoughts, attitudes, and actions.

When a person accepts Christ as Savior, they are sanctified. (I Corinthians 1:2)

Experiential sanctification or

sanctification occurs conversion. This second aspect of sanctification is an process in the life of every believer.

Jesus is our in that he allowed himself to be on a cross for us.

Positional sanctification changes our position. Our new position means we are:
1. Part of the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27)
2. God’s special possession (1 Peter 2:9)
3. New creations (2 Corinthians 5:17)
4. Dead to sin (Romans 6:2)
5. Possessors of the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4)
6. No longer sinners deserving of God’s wrath, but beloved children of the Father and perfect in His eyes

Positional sanctification is the work of God whereby He sets us apart

While the separation is

sin, impurity and all that is unholy, primarily it is a separation the person, life and characteristics of in Christ.

Progressive sanctification is the process of becoming more like , as we to, and depend upon, the Holy Spirit.

Paul tells the Colossians they are “ ” (on an ongoing, continual basis) into the image of their Creator.
(Colossians 3:10)

Sanctification results from the

presence and of the Holy Spirit working in a Christian’s life.
(Galatians 5:22–26; Ephesians 3:20; 2 Corinthians 12:9–10)

God’s word is just as clear that it is for us to ourselves.
