Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
He ascended into heaven,
Is seated at the right hand of the Father,
And will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
The holy catholic church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection of the body,
And the life everlasting.
Amen.

“One Holy Christian Church”
Acts 9:31
31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was
strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in
numbers.
Question: ‘What is the Church? What is the purpose of the Church?’
Matthew 16:17-18
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh
and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will
build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

What is the purpose of the Church?
1.Worship and Glorify God
Psalm 34:3
3 Glorify the Lord with me;
let us exalt his name together.
2.Create a Community
Paul’s “One Another” statements in his letters
3.Do the work of God
John 20:19b-22
“Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were
overjoyed when they saw the Lord.
21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And
with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.
Ephesians 4:7
7 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.
Ephesians 4:12-13
12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all
reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to
the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Genesis 6:5-6
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that
every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the
time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply
troubled.
Matthew 25:34-40
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take
your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was
hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you
looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or
thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or
needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers
and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
The purpose of the Church
*Worship and Glorify God
*Build Community
*Do the work of God
I believe…In the Communion of Saints
Saints = All Christians
1 Corinthians 1:2
2 To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy
people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their
Lord and ours.
2 Corinthians 3:18
18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into
his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
The Communion of Saints: the whole community of faithful followers of Christ; living and
dead; past, present and future.
“I believe we’re never closer to our loved ones who have died…than when we worship” – Pastor
Adam Hamilton
“When we gather in worship, we praise God with believers we cannot see. When we celebrate
Holy Communion, we feast with past, present and future disciples of Christ. We experience the
communion of saints, the community of believers –– living and dead. This faith community
stretches beyond space and time. We commune with Christians around the world, believers who
came before us, and believers who will come after us. We believe that the church is the
communion of saints, and as a believer, you belong to the communion of saints.” Rev. Katie
Shockley
Hebrews 12:1-2
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off
everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the
race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
