Sermon Title: The invitation to Community
Scripture: Matthew 4:18-22; ESV, Matthew 8:18-22; ESV, Matthew 9:9-10, Matthew 10:1-4, Matthew 20:20-27

I. The implications

  1. Jesus lived in community

  2. Lots of people turned down Jesus’ invitation

  3. The end goal of community is to become a people of love

II. The mistaken assumptions we make about community

  1. We mistake connectivity with community

“face to face conversation is the most human and humanizing thing we do; fully present to one another we learn to listen and develop the capacity for empathy. (think about how people speak to each other vs how they speak when facing a computer). It’s where we experience the joy of being heard and being understood.” “(“Reclaiming Conversation: The power of talk in a digital age” - Sherry Turkle)

2.We mistake chemistry for community

“Friendship … is born at the moment when one man says to another “What! You too? I thought that no one but myself …” (“The Four Loves” ― C.S. Lewis)

III. What is community

  1. Koinonia - community, fellowship, partnership, sharing; to have in common.

The kingdom of God and the church are the same thing . (“Kingdom COnspiracy” - Scot Mcknight)
