ONESIPHORUS: 2 Timothy 1:16
● Meaning of the name: “Profit Bearer.”
● Possibly a deacon from the church in Ephesus.”
ONESIPHORUS: Philemon 1:16
● Run-away slave of Philemon.
● Paul sent him back to Philemon as a brother in Christ.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF DISCIPLESHIP:
● A “true disciple” is:
o A “follower/learner” of Jesus.
o “Counter-cultural” in lifestyle.
o Transformed/Changed by the process of discipleship.
o F.A.T.: Faithful, Available and Teachable!
● Discipleship involves reading, learning and training, but the bottom-line for discipleship is “DOING LIFE TOGETHER.”
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF 2 TIMOTHY 1:1-2:7
● Paul: Disciple-Maker & Timothy: Disciple In-Process
● They kept growing, maturing, and being empowered by the Holy Spirit with courage, love, power and self-control.
● Neither were ashamed of the sacrificial death of Christ nor the imprisonment of Paul.
● Both were willing to suffer for the cause of Christ.
● They were loyal to God’s Word and to God’s servants.
THE RESULTS:
● Paul shared truths and life skills with Timothy.
● Timothy shared those same truths with others who were “F.A.T.”
● The Message of Christ spread throughout the known world quickly.
THE CHARGE TO FOLLOW:
● Listen to God’s Word carefully.
● Seek His understanding on these principles.
● True understanding is a gift from God.
TODAY’S STUDY: 2 Timothy 2:8-26
THE BATTLE CRY OF THE DISCIPLE: 2 Timothy 2:8-10
● Remember Jesus Christ!
● Why?
o Paul was bound with chains.
o God’s Word was not bound by anything.
o Endure whatever comes for the “sake of the elect.”
THE DISCIPLE TRUSTS HIS COMMANDER: 2 Timothy 2:11-13
● Pair of Paradoxes.
● Somber Warnings.
MISSIONARY HUDSON TAYLOR: “It is not by trying to be faithful, but in looking to the Faithful One, that we win the victory.”
A DISCIPLE SHOULD BE AN APPROVED WORKER: 2 Timothy 2:14-18
● Approved means “Tested and Found Acceptable.”
o Studies the Word of God for Application.
o Doesn’t Waste Time Arguing.
o Exposes False Doctrine.
A DISCIPLE KNOWS FOUNDATIONAL TRUTHS: 2 Timothy 2:19-21
● God knows who belongs to Him.
● Those people know Him personally and are transformed and secure.
● Those people are “sound teachers.”
A DISCIPLE KNOWS WHAT TO FLEE, PURSUE, & WHO TO FOLLOW: 2 Timothy 2:22-23
● FLEE: Youthful Lusts.
● PURSUE: Righteousness, Faith, Love and Peace.
● FOLLOW: Jesus.”
● HOW? With a pure heart.
A DISCIPLE DESIRES TO HELP OTHERS: 2 Timothy 2:24-26
● Not quarrelsome but kind.
● Able to teach.
● Patiently endure evil & correct gently.
● WHY? To help them repent, recover and return to God.
