Devotional Guide | March 11-16, 2024
Message Overview:
We started a new series on Sunday called “Dying to Live.” In John 12, we saw how Mary’s sacrificial act of anointing Jesus speaks volumes about what it means to live a life of worship and gratitude.
Here are a few key takeaways from the sermon:
1. True Worship Involves Sacrifice: Mary’s anointing of Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume illustrates the depth of worship that is willing to give up what is valuable. Worship is not just about singing songs; it’s about surrendering our treasures to God.
2. Gratitude is Expressed Through Action: We learned from the story of Joan from St. Paul and her later generosity, how early acts of kindness can lead to life-changing gratitude. Like Mary, we are called to express our thankfulness to Jesus for the transformations He’s made in our lives, not just with words, but through our actions.
3. Living Purposefully in the Present: Every moment of our lives prepares us for what we are facing now. Mary’s anointing act was not just for then, it was a preparation for Jesus’ burial, reminding us that our current actions have eternal significance.
4. Surrender Leads to Renewal: The sermon closed with an encouragement to lay down our burdens at Jesus’ feet, trusting Him with our most precious possessions and concerns. In surrender, we find new life and peace.
As we continue our week, let us carry the fragrance of a life lived for Jesus with us, influencing those around us with the aroma of our worship and devotion. May we be willing to give Jesus what matters most, trusting Him to transform our sacrifices into a beautiful act of worship.
Day 1: The Heart of Worship Scripture: John 12:1-3 - Mary’s Act of Anointing Jesus
Begin your week by reading about the profound act of worship Mary demonstrated by anointing Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. Reflect on the heart of worship that is willing to give sacrificially and without reservation. Worship is not about the cost of the gift but the condition of the heart offering it.
Questions for Reflection:
What does Mary’s act of anointing Jesus teach us about the nature of true worship?
How can you show a heart of worship in your daily life?
Prayer: Lord, help me to have a heart like Mary, willing to give You my best without hesitation. Teach me to worship You in spirit and truth.
Day 2: Gratitude and Generosity Scripture: Luke 7:36-50 - The Woman Who Anointed Jesus’ Feet
As you read another account of Jesus being anointed, consider the theme of gratitude that permeates this story. This woman, moved by deep gratitude, pours out her love and thanks at Jesus’ feet. Generosity flows naturally from a grateful heart.
Questions for Reflection:
How has Jesus changed your life, and how does this influence your generosity?
In what ways can you express your gratitude to Jesus through your actions?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am grateful for Your endless mercy and grace. Let my life be an outpouring of thanks for all that You have done for me.
Day 3: The Fragrance of Faith Scripture: 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 - Being the Aroma of Christ
The fragrance of Mary’s perfume lingered, just as our acts of worship and devotion can leave a lasting impact on those around us. Read about how we are called to be the pleasing aroma of Christ in the world.
Questions for Reflection:
How can your life spread the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ to others?
What are some specific ways you can make your faith visible and aromatic to those around you?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, may my life be a fragrance that draws others to You. Use me to spread Your love and grace wherever I go.
Day 4: The Beauty of Surrender Scripture: Philippians 3:7-8 - Valuing Christ Above All
In his letter to the Philippians, Paul speaks of surrendering all for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ. Consider what it means to count everything as loss compared to the treasure of a relationship with Jesus.
Questions for Reflection:
What might you need to surrender to deepen your relationship with Christ?
How does valuing Jesus above all else change your perspective on life’s challenges and decisions?
Prayer: Gracious God, show me what I need to lay at Your feet. I desire to know Christ more and consider all else as secondary to His love and grace.
Day 5: The Cost of Discipleship Scripture: Mark 8:34-38 - Taking Up Your Cross
Jesus calls His followers to take up their cross, embracing the cost of discipleship. Reflect on the ways in which following Jesus may require sacrifice and what it means to live a life committed to His call.
Questions for Reflection:
What does it mean to you to take up your cross and follow Jesus?
Are there areas in your life where you are holding back from fully committing to Christ?
Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to embrace the sacrifices required to follow You. Help me to live a life that faithfully reflects Your love and dedication.
