Sermon Series: Never Alone
Sermon Title: Lonely in Love
Passage: Genesis 29
Speaker: Steve Howell (Senior Minister)

‌Use the following questions based on today’s sermon as a starting point for spiritual discussions with your family or a small group of Christian friends this week.

‌Fellowship—Relationship with a Purpose

• If you could give one piece of relationship advice to a young person, what would it be? How has it helped you navigate your relationships?

‌Growth—Thinking About Spiritual Matters

• God’s connection with His people is often presented in terms of marriage (read Hosea 2:19-20 and Revelation 19:6-8). In what ways would His covenants be similar to marriage? How might they be different?
• How does God’s experience with our rejections make Him more trustworthy when it comes to helping us through lonely relationships?
• Who has been the best example of a joyful and passionate marriage in your life? What traits do they have that a lonely and distant couple lack?
• How can you encourage brothers and sisters in Christ who come to church without their spouse? Choose one couple to pray for.
• In Genesis 29:30, we find that Leah was married but unloved. What emotions do you expect her to face in that situation? Why does drawing near to God help you cope with those lonely emotions?
• Is it better to be single or married? Compare Proverbs 18:22 and 1 Corinthians 7:38 as you debate your answer.
• What cares and responsibilities can the single person avoid that a married person cannot?
• How can you encourage brothers and sisters in Christ who are single…without trying to play matchmaker?
• Since marriage is only for this life and not the next (Matthew 22:30), what does that tell you about your priorities when it comes to God vs. Spouse? How does increased devotion to God end up blessing the marriage?

‌Prayer – Taking Your Thoughts to God

• Thank God for your current relationship status! Ask Him to help you see the blessings that come from your current situation, and to help you find more hope in Him than in people.
