Blessed: I Want to See God!

God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. —Matthew 5:8

A principal part of the Jewish religion consisted in outward washings and cleansings; on this ground they expected to see God. However, Christ here shows that a purification of the heart is essential in order to enter into the kingdom of God. —Adam Clarke

I no longer count on my own righteousness (purity) through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous (pure) through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself (pure) depends on faith. —Philippians 3:9b

Keep all my decrees by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD who makes you holy. —Leviticus 20:8

Big Idea: I cannot produce a pure heart, but a pure heart should produce some things in me.

Big Question: What should a pure heart produce in me?
Main Scripture: Philippians 3:12-21

I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. —Philippians 3:12-14

What should a pure heart produce in me?
1. A pressing on to reach perfection

That is, whose minds, motives, and principles are pure; who seek not only to have the external actions correct, but who desire to be holy in heart. —Albert Barnes

Though they may still struggle against sin, their heart loves purity, their heart seeks after holiness, and their heart pines after perfection. —Charles Spurgeon

Let all who are spiritually mature agree on these things. If you disagree on some point, I believe God will make it plain to you. 16 But we must hold on to the progress we have already made. 17 Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example. 18 For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. —Philippians 3:15-19

What should a pure heart produce in me?
1. A pressing on to reach perfection
2. A pattern of life that is pure

The man who is quite satisfied with the name of a Christian without the life of a Christian will never see God nor anything at all until his eyes are divinely opened. —Charles Spurgeon

But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. 21 He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control. —Philippians 3:20-21

What should a pure heart produce in me?
1. A pressing on to reach perfection
2. A pattern of life that is pure
3. A proper view of my place

To an impure heart, God cannot be seen anywhere; but to a pure heart God is to be seen everywhere. —Charles Spurgeon
