Discussion Questions - Luke 6:37-42

  1. Jesus’ teaching goes against all other worldly teaching and leadership. He tells us to take heart if we are poor and hungry and weeping and excluded. He tells us to love our enemies. Now, He is telling us not to judge and condemn, but instead forgive and give to others. What other ways are Jesus’ teaching and the world’s different?
  2. Is Jesus speaking here about eternal judgment, condemnation and forgiveness or something else? Explain your answer a bit.
  3. Can you think of any ways or examples of taking Luke 6:37 out of context?
  4. Jesus tells us not to be judgmental. Talk about some of the ways that He modeled this for us?
  5. Why do you think groups like the Pharisees had become so judgmental?
  6. How do we, as modern Christians in the modern Church, prevent a judgmental spirit in ourselves?
  7. Can you give a biblical definition of the word forgiveness?
  8. Jesus gives the first century illustration about buying grain as He’s teaching on God’s generosity. If He were here and teaching now, what contemporary illustration might he have given to make his point?
  9. How is it that Jesus can teach such bold and counter-cultural things? What makes him worthy of following, rather than following a “blind guide?”
  10. Jesus speaks about a speck and a plank in vs. 41-42. He often uses wild and hyperbolic imagery, like this, to make His point. Why do you think that He does this?
  11. What does hypocrite mean?
  12. Why does Jesus so often call out hypocrites and warn his followers against becoming hypocritical? (cf. Matt. 6:2,5,16; 23:13-29).
  13. What takeaway do you think Jesus wants us to leave this passage with?
  14. How will this section of the Sermon on the Plain impact your own actions this week?
