23 and Me (Psalm 23) - Message Study Questions

Message Summary

We can look at Psalm 23 from three different perspectives. Each perspective gives us a deeper understanding of the Psalm and why it connects our heart with the heart of God. David sees God as his protector, provider, and corrector. From God’s eyes, he is the good shepherd who provides, protects, and corrects his children. Viewing this Psalm through our eyes brings comfort because we know that God is our provider, protector, and corrector. God’s rod and staff are symbolic of God correcting and protecting His children. Sometimes when God disciplines us, it’s not fun, but it is necessary. God’s correction may sting, but it’s always for our good.

God is preparing a place for you in heaven. Everything will be made right as you are welcomed into the presence of God. Will you surrender your situation to the Good Shepherd today? Will you trust God to provide for you? Will you trust God to protect your heart, your emotions, and your physical body? Will you be open to God’s correction? We do not naturally belong to the Lord’s flock. We are orphans and need to be brought into the fold of the True Shepherd.

  1. What are your frequent fears? Can you share how you overcome them?

  2. What are some of the most comforting things you have experienced in your faith walk?

Consider This

Approach the Psalms with a decluttered life so you can read them with open eyes and hearts. When you do, it will sink in and help you to connect your heart to the heart of God.

  1. What does God being your shepherd mean to you?

  2. Specifically, how does God provide for his sheep in verses 1-3? How has God provided for you in the past?

  3. Can you share a time when the Lord restored you?

    • How does remembering that help you to trust in Him more?

    • How does that cause you to better follow Him where He leads?

  4. Is it easier for you to follow God in times of goodness or hardship? Why?

  5. Can you share a time when you experienced God’s correcting discipline? How did that go for you in the long run?

  6. God is likened to a shepherd in v1-4 and a host v5. How would you compare and contrast these two metaphors?

    • Shepherd

    • Host

  7. How could David boldly say, “I fear no evil”? How could you boldly say that you fear no evil?

  8. Enemies are a common theme in the Psalms, and again here in Psalm 23. Who are your enemies today? (1 Peter 5:8, 1 Cor 15:26)

  9. How does the promise of eternity with Christ change the way we handle and look at hardships on earth?

  10. How can you know that you are one of God’s sheep and that He is indeed your shepherd?

Moving Forward – Application

“You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings” - Psalm 23:5

  1. Name your fears and ask God to relieve them by reading through and appropriating Psalm 23.

  2. How can you celebrate and thank God for His blessings to you this week?

  3. Do you know someone struggling with fear with whom you could share the promises of Psalm 23 this week?

  4. For what things will you ask God to provide for you this week? Protect you from? Direct you to and through?
