SERMON NOTES

Firm Foundation - Zach Lamberson

Matthew 6:1-8 - Prayer & Giving

Concerning Giving

God doesn’t need our gifts, He supplies them.

For every beast of the forest is mine, And the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the mountains, and the wild beasts of the field are mine. “If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all its fullness.” Psalm 50:10-12, NKJV

Money doesn’t supply our needs, God does.

Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness! The more you have, the more people come to help you spend it. So what good is wealth—except perhaps to watch it slip through your fingers! Ecclesiastes 5:10-11, NLT

Our giving shouldn’t be compulsory, but willing.

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9:7, NKJV

We don’t give to be seen or praised by others.

Giving is a practical metric to judge your heart.

The children of Israel brought a freewill offering to the LORD, all the men and women whose hearts were willing to bring material for all kinds of work which the LORD, by the hand Moses commanded be done. Exodus 35:29, NKJV

In our giving we can never out-give God.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21, NKJV

Concerning Prayer

  • The reward of prayer is closeness with God.
  • Answered prayer is one of the defining practices of real believing faith
  • The “secret place” is a place of quiet solitude where we meet with God
  • Everyone has equal access to the “secret place”
  • God does not hear us for how many words we speak or how well we speak them
  • He hears the heart of our prayers
  • Purpose of prayer isn’t to change God’s mind but to change our hearts
  • He knows what you need and knows you more than you know yourself

Deep Dive

Deep Dive - follow-up passages

  • 2 Corinthians 9 (on giving)
  • 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (on frequency of prayer)
  • Psalm 139 (on the intimacy of God)

Deep Dive - follow-up questions

  • What are some additional principles on giving that Paul outlines in 2 Corinthians 9?
  • What does it mean to “pray without ceasing”? What does that look like practically?
  • How does the knowledge that God “knows you” help you?
