Stop receiving Jesus as a novelty and start seeing Jesus in His majesty.

Mark 1:21–28

vv.21–22—Mark emphasizes the teaching (word used four times in this passage) of Jesus and the crowd’s amazement (see v. 27).

—Jesus teaches as one possessing authority.
—Scribes were experts in the law and would recite the law and other experts of the law. Scribes had no authority outside what they could recite—”The law says this…this Rabbi said that…”

vv.23–28—The scene is interrupted by a person possessed by a demon.

—The person has an “unclean” spirit, which serves as a comparison to the Holy Spirit, who descended upon Jesus.

—The demons are the ones with dialogue. In narratives (stories), dialogue makes sense of the action. This dialogue is our cue to SLOW DOWN and PAY ATTENTION.

—The demons highlight the mission of Jesus—to destroy the kingdom of satan.

—The demons identify the incarnate Jesus—from Nazareth (human), the Holy One of God (divine).

—Jesus commands the demons to shut up and get out. They screech and then flee.

—The crowd once again marvels at Jesus—He teaches with authority and commands demons to flee.

Jesus, the Holy One of God, has all

.

Jesus, the Holy One of God, is
