JESUS IS BOTH CHRIST & LORD
by Jeremy Vess

Introduction

Jesus Christ is both Savior and Lord.
He came not only to forgive our sins but also to transform our lives by His Holy Spirit.
So what does this mean, and how should our lives respond?

  1. Jesus Forgives, but He Also Commands Us to Leave Sin

John 8:11 (The woman caught in adultery)
Context:
A woman caught in the act of adultery was brought before Jesus by the Pharisees, hoping to trap Him into condemning her. Instead of condemning her, Jesus challenged those without sin to cast the first stone. After everyone left, He forgave her—but also called her to leave her sin behind.

“No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

John 3:16–17:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

This is not a command of repentance through condemnation, but rather a call to repentance in order to break the power of sin and death in your life so you may have a full life!

John 10:10:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

John 5:14 (NIV) (Healing of the man at the pool of Bethesda)
Context:
At the pool of Bethesda, Jesus healed a man who had been crippled for 38 years. Later, Jesus found him in the temple and gave him an important warning—that physical healing was only part of the miracle. His soul needed healing too.

John 5:14:
“Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, ‘See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.’”

Note:
Sin has

.
Vertically, sin has been addressed by Jesus’s sacrifice, meaning God’s wrath and condemnation are no longer directed at believers who have accepted Christ.
Horizontally, sin still has consequences, as it can allow Satan to gain access to a person’s life and cause destructive effects.

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector
Luke 19:1-10
1Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.
5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”
8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,“Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

JESUS CALLS US TO

Ephesians‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬-‭32‬ ‭NLT

“With the Lord’s authority I say this: Live no longer as the Gentiles [the world] do [does], for they are hopelessly confused. Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him. They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and eagerly practice every kind of impurity.

But that isn’t what you learned about Christ. Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from him, throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.

Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.

And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, for anger gives a foothold to the devil.

If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need.

Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

And do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, he has identified you as his own, guaranteeing that you will be saved on the day of redemption.

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.

Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”

JESUS PREACHED

Matthew 4:12–17 (NIV)

“When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He withdrew to Galilee.
Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali—
to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
‘Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people living in darkness have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.’
From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’”

  1. Jesus Is the Prophesied Messiah and Savior and He preached repentance
    • Jesus fulfilled over 300 prophecies from the Old Testament.
    • His name, Yeshua, means “Salvation” or “God saves.”

Matthew 1:21 (NKJV)

“And she [Mary] will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

JESUS IS

&

Acts 2:29–39 (NKJV)
Peter preached:
““Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us. But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne. David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave. “God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this. Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today. For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’ “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!” Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.””

  1. What Is Repentance?
    • Turning from sin
    • Acknowledging

If there’s no acknowledgment of wrongdoing, then what is there to be forgiven for?
• Feeling sorrow for sin

II Corinthians 7:10–11 (NKJV)

“For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner:
What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication!
In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter.”

through Christ by the renewing of your mind

Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

II Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

  1. Jesus Is — King of Kings and Lord of Lords

Revelation 19:16 (NKJV)

“And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Lord
GREEK: KYRIOS
meaning: Lord, master, sir; the Lord. From kuros; supreme in authority, i.e. controller; by implication, Master.

  1. Why Call Him ‘Lord, Lord’ and Not ?

Luke 6:46–49 (NIV)

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?
As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.
They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.
But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

  1. Jesus Doesn’t Just Save You — His Spirit You

Romans 8:11 (NKJV)

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,
He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”

John 14:15–27 (NIV)

15 “If you love me, keep my commands.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—
17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you.
26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Titus 2:11-15

11 For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.
15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

Today, if you hear His voice—respond.
Repent, turn to Jesus, and receive His Holy Spirit.
