Relationship Reset: Happily Ever After
Matthew 19:1-3
When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went down to the region of Judea east of
the Jordan River. Large crowds followed him there, and he healed their sick. Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
Matthew 19:4-6
“Haven’t you read the Scriptures?” Jesus replied. “They record that from the beginning ‘God made them male
and female.’” And he said, “‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife,
and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one, let no one split apart what God has
joined together.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can
reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together
can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and
defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not
easily broken.
“A Christian marriage is not simply a commitment between two people. It is a commitment between two
people and God.” —Tim Keller, The Meaning of Marriage
What if God designed marriage to make us holy more than to make us happy?
“We cannot change others. We can only allow ourselves to be changed.” —Dallas Willard
