THE GREAT DISCONNECT

How to stay connected to Jesus and avoid pitfalls of man-made religion. Understand two things:

I. THE

OF MAN-MADE RELIGION.

A. It will rob you of

!

Mark 2:18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. Some people came and asked Jesus, “How is it that John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?”

  1. : What Christians need to know:

  2. Wedding Feasts are

    a proper time to fast.

Mark 2:19 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? They cannot, so long as they have him with them.

  3. Jesus crucifixion was the

    time to fast.

Mark 2:20 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them, and on that day they will fast.

  4. Application #1: Life is about a joyful relationship with Jesus, not religious

    !

B. It will contaminate and ruin your

.

Mark 2:21 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.

  1. Application #2: Jesus doesn’t just

up your old life; He gives you a new life!

Mark 2:22 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.”

  2. Application #3: You can’t

anything to the finished work of Jesus! (So stop trying!)

Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

II. THE

FOUND IN A RELATIONSHIP WITH
JESUS.

Mark 2:23-24 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain, 24 The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

  1. : Origins…

A. Christians are NOT

to observe the Jewish
Sabbath rules.

Mark 2:25-26 He answered, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? 26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions.”

  1. Jesus challenges “

    ” of scripture.

  2. Pharisees ‘knew’ the

, but misapplied it. (Disconnected!) Colossians 2:16-17 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

  3. Application #4: Knowing the Bible isn’t

; you need a personal connection with Jesus!

B. Jesus is

of the Sabbath.

Mark 2:27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.

  1. Sabbath created

    Human Beings.

  2. Jesus is Lord of

    (“even”)!

  3. Application #5: Jesus came to set us

from the law of sin and death, and now offers eternal life to anyone who will trust in him!
John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

III.Conclusion: God wants to help you

with Jesus!
