More Than A Miracle: Sweat the Small Stuff
The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. —John 20:30-31
That evening many demon-possessed people were brought to Jesus. He cast out the evil spirits with a simple command, and he healed all the sick. —Matthew 8:16
Big Idea: No need is too big for Jesus, but no need is too small for Him either.
Big Question: How should I respond when I’m in need?
Main Scripture: John 2:1-12
The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. 3 The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” —John 2:1-3
“Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.”
—John 2:4
Everyone wants a miracle. But here’s the catch: no one wants to be in a situation that necessitates one! Of course, you can’t have one without the other. —Mark Batterson (from the book The Grave Robber)
But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. 7a Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” —John 2:5-7a
When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. —John 2:7b-8
When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. 10 “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” —John 2:9-10
This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. —John 2:11
How should I respond when I’m in need?
- Come to Jesus first.
- Continue to have faith.
- Commit to following Him.
After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. —John 2:12
After this, Jesus traveled around Galilee. He wanted to stay out of Judea, where the Jewish leaders were plotting his death. 2 But soon it was time for the Jewish Festival of Shelters, 3 and Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! 4 You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” 5 For even his brothers didn’t believe in him. —John 7:1-5
🔹 Is there a need in my life I have not brought to Jesus because I think it’s too big or even too small?
🔹 Is Jesus asking me to do something that I have been unwilling to do?
🔹 Have I committed my life to following Him?
The first miracle foreshadows the last. At the wedding in Cana, Jesus turned water into wine. At the Last Supper (and crucifixion), Jesus turned an ordinary cup of wine into a bottomless glass of grace. —Mark Batterson
