PRESERVING UNITY & HOLINESS

1Pet. 1:16, Matt. 18:15-17
1. The

- Jesus taught that this love should be. John 15:12 This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. You are commanded to love me the way Jesus does.
2. The - Jesus also taught us why this should be.
John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
The New Testament teaches how this love can be;
Rom. 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. (1 Pet. 4:8)
I Cor. 13-This kind of love is patient-  Charity suffereth long (patience, no retaliation when provoked), and is kind (action)
-This kind of love is deferential- seeketh not her own (not selfish, doesn’t insist on having its own way),
-This kind of love is composed when pushed- is not easily provoked (into anger or bitterness),
-This kind of love doesn’t keep a record-thinketh no evil (accounting term, doesn’t keep account of wrongs)
-This kind of love chooses to - “Beareth all things, believeth all things.”
3. The - Sometimes we get out of alignment. Whether we offend or are too easily offended. Of course, Jesus knew there would be exceptions. So He gave us some instructions, for what should be, the exceptions.
Matthew 5:23-24 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
a. Who do you tell?
4. The - This deals with unity and purity. -Matthew 18:16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
-to clear things up. Gal. 6:1
-to confirm the problem.
-Matthew 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. (I Cor. 5. 1 Timothy 5:20)
Consider the context of Matt. 18.  It is a chapter on the childlikeness of the believer.
1. we enter the kingdom like little children (3-4).
2. we go through life protected like a little child (6)
3. we must be cared for like a little child (10-14).
4. we must be disciplined like a little child (15-20).
The - Matthew 18, Acts 5, 1 Cor. 5. 2 Thess. 3:10-15  God is concerned about the holiness of His church and He’s called us to deal with sin in His assembly.  Paul did it continuously.  So did John, even naming names such as Diotrephes.
The - “church” “The pillar and ground of truth” 1Ti 3:15
The - vs. 15 “If he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.”
