We Need to Remind Each Other!

2 Peter 1:12-21
Pastor Steve Witt

I. Reminding

Us Up!
[2 Peter 1:12-13]

Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have. 13 I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder…

v12 Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities

And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
-Deuteronomy 6:6-9

v12 Though you know them and are established in the truth that you have

I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
-1 John 2:21

v13 As long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
-Hebrews 10:24-25

II. Reminding

the Now and Next
[2 Peter 1:14-15]

14 Since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.15 And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.

v14 I know that the putting off of my body will be soon

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
-2 Corinthians 5:1-4

v15 I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
-2 Timothy 4:6-8

III. Reminding Keeps Us from

[2 Peter 1:16-18]

16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

v16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths

So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
-2 Thessalonians 2:15

v16 The power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
-1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

v17 When he received honor and glory from God the Father

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
-Philippians 2:9-11

v17-18 The voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
-Matthew 17:5

IV. Reminding Helps Us to

2 Peter 1:19-21

19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

v19 We have the prophetic word more fully confirmed

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
-John 17:17

v19 You will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
-John 1:5

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
-1 John 1:7

v19 Until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
-Psalm 119:11

v20 No prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
-2 Timothy 3:16-17

Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord…”
-Jeremiah 23:16

v21 No prophecy was ever produced by the will of man

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
-2 Timothy 3:16-17

v21 Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
-Romans 15:13

And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.
-Acts 5:32
