RATIFYING YOUR “13 TH AMENDMENT”

Romans 6:1-14

I. INTRODUCTION:
A. A ray of hope proclaimed in the backdrop of American
history:
1. On the heels of potential political defeat and in the
midst of war:
2. Penning a liberating document in September 22,1862:
3. Ratifying the document as the 13 th amendment in
January 1865:

B. A ray of hope proclaimed in the backdrop of my story:
(Jer. 17:7; Jn. 8:36)
1. The dark days of living without a hopeful spiritual
emancipation: (Eph. 2:12)
2. The choice that “ratified” your emancipation
proclamation: (Rom. 10:9-10, 13; I Pet. 1:3)
3. Publicly proclaiming your emancipation: (Mt. 28:19;
Acts 2:41; Rom. 1:16)

C. The provocative question to explore with my newfound
freedom: vv. 1-2
1. Your hypothetical question – “Can I continue in sin
so grace will abound?”:
2. Paul’s bold response – “God forbid”:

II. THREE COMMANDS FOR THIS NEWFOUND FREEDOM:
A. “Know” the facts: vv. 3-10
1. Your new identity signified by the water: v. 3a
2. A new identity with Christ’s resurrection: vv. 3b-5

  1. The old life no longer in charge: vv. 6-7
  2. It was once and for all: vv. 8-10

B. “Reckon” in implementation: vv. 11-12
1. What it means to reckon (live like a free man):
2. The results of reckoning:
a. Confidence in the midst of temptation:
(I Cor. 10:13)
b. Confidence that we cannot sin our way out of
God’s grace:(Jn. 10:27-29)
c. Confidence in the face of death: (Jn. 11:25-26;
Heb. 2:14)
d. Confidence that in spite of how disastrous life
becomes, God will use the situation for His glory
and for our blessing: (Rom. 8:28)

C. “Yield” your will: vv. 13-14
1. What it means to yield:
2. Give in to Christ’s will with a grasp of God’s Word:
(protect, provide, perfect)

III. PRINCIPLES TO PERSONALLY APPLY:
(Together becoming “people of the Word” in principle AND in practice)
A. Your feelings can self-impose slavery even after you
have been emancipated. (Jn. 10:9-10, 13; I Jn. 5:13)
B. Your habits can self-impose slavery even after you
have been emancipated. (Rom. 7:15)
C. Your emancipation penned by Christ guaranteeing your
blessed hope, rests exclusively upon your personal
choice to “ratify”. (Rev. 3:20, Tit. 2:13-14; 3:7)

Sinners Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I was made by you and I was made for you, but
I have been living for myself. I am sorry for that self-rule you call sin.
I believe that Jesus Christ being my creator God, died, was buried,
and rose again to pay the insurmountable debt that my sin has
created since birth. So right now, I am turning from a life of going my
own way, to by faith, place my trust in Jesus Christ, to pay the debt of
all my sin, and to get me to heaven, when I breath my last breath.
Lord Jesus, from today on, I am yours. Thanks for saving me, this
very moment, in Jesus name, Amen.
