READ AGAIN: Luke 8:22-25

  1. Why do you think Jesus wanted to cross the sea that night? (v.22)
  2. The disciples didn’t seem to question or protest Jesus’ instructions. (v.22) How do you most often push back against Jesus’ calling in your life?
  3. Matthew describes the storm in Greek like a σεισμός/seismos (an earthquake). (cf. Matt. 8:24, “furious storm” in the NIV = “earthquake” in Greek) This was scary enough that it had professional fishermen convinced they were about to die. What do the storms in your life look like most often?
  4. It’s almost comical to think that Jesus is sleeping during this. He’s being tossed around and pelted with rain too. The loud thunder doesn’t seem to rouse Him. Do you think that Jesus was just that tired, or was He sleeping to make a spiritual point?
  5. Why do you think Luke likes to speak of Jesus “rebuking” even inanimate things, like winds and waves? (v.24) Does that point to some deeper spiritual truth?
  6. Jesus quieted the storm and asked His disciples “Where is your faith?” This question must have stung a bit. They didn’t pass the test of their faith. How could they have acted differently and displayed more faith?
  7. The disciples are filled with fear, after the storm is calmed. Why?
  8. How can it be that such an amazing story takes up so little space in our Gospels?
  9. Imagine that you have to sum up the point that God wants to make to everyone in this story in one sentence. What would that sentence be?
  10. Can you think of a time when you felt like God led you to do something you didn’t want to do and you obeyed? Maybe at the time it was hard and confusing, but how do you think about that time now?
  11. What has Jesus been calling you to lately? Have you stepped into the boat with Him or have you been hesitant?
