READY TO STAY ON MISSION
After the arrest of John, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the gospel.” Mark 1:14-15
Jesus’ message from Day One, summarized in three words:
“Good news; life-altering, history-making news.”
“The Kingdom of God is within you.” Luke 17:21
“The kingdom of God… is like a tiny mustard seed.” Luke 13:19
“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast…” Matthew 13:33
“…receive the kingdom of God like a little child…” Mark 10:15
Kingdoms of this world
Kingdom of God
Greek metanoia; change of mind; Hebrew shuv; turn around, come back
How can I stay on mission?
1. Start each day
2. Stay
3. See myself
QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. Read Mark 1:14-15. This is Mark’s summary of Jesus’ message. Jesus proclaims the “gospel,” which means “good news” – news so amazing that it changes everything about reality once understood. How is Jesus such good news that He changes everything? What happens when we change the “good news” into mere “good advice”?
2. Next Jesus says, “the kingdom of God is at hand.” Read Luke 13:19; Luke 17:21; Matthew 13:33; and Mark 10:15. Based on these verses, what characterizes the kingdom of God? How does this differ from expectations at this time regarding what the coming of God’s kingdom would be like, as people sought political liberation from the Romans? How is the kingdom of God different from the kingdoms of this world?
3. Finally Jesus asks us to “repent” – to turn around and change our way of thinking. How can you turn from the ways of the kingdoms of this world and toward the ways of the kingdom of God? In your workplace? In your attitudes? In your engagement with politics, news, culture, etc.?
4. How can you be an ambassador, an outpost, of the kingdom of heaven in your life?
