OUR FATHER: WORDS YOU THOUGHT YOU KNEW
Everyday Forgiveness
May 17, 2020
Big idea: The Lord’s prayer is not something that you just pray: it’s a prayer that you actually live.
• Two of the greatest barriers in your life that keep you from experiencing genuine peace of mind are guilt and resentment.
Matthew 6:9-12 - “’Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’”
Proverbs 28:13 - He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Romans 8:1 - Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…
1 John 1:8 - If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
John 13:8-10 - “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” 9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” 10 Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.”
• Jesus’ act of foot washing was more than an example of humility; it was also a picture of the forgiveness God gives in His repeated cleansing of those who are already saved.
Nehemiah 9:17 - But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.
• ASKING forgiveness implies confession.
1 John 1:9 - “If we confess our sins…
• To confess means to AGREE WITH, and when we confess our sins we agree with God about them that they are wicked, evil, and have no part in those who belong to Him.
Proverbs 28:13 - He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.
So what do I do?
1. I review every AREA of my life.
Psalm 139:23-24 - Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
2. I REPENT of every sin.
• Take responsibility
• Turn away from those things
• Turn toward God and His grace
1 John 1:8 - If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
• You will stop defeating yourself when you stop deceiving yourself.
3. I receive God’s FOREGIVENESS.
Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of
need.
• MERCY is forgiveness for all the things you’ve done in the past.
• GRACE is the power to change in the future.
Let me tell you how not to get God’s forgiveness.
• You don’t beg God.
• You don’t bargain or bribe.
• You JUST believe.
1 John 1:8-9 - If we say that we have not sinned, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth isn’t in our hearts. 9 But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away. CEV
• CONFESS comes from two words in the Greek:
Homo means: The same
Logo means: The Word
Romans 5:1-2 - Therefore, since we have been justified [that means acquitted, declared righteous] through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.
