He’s Talking About You (Part 2) - Conquering Anxiety

  • When the Bible talks about overcomers, it’s talking about .

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. —I John 4:4

For whatever [whoever] is born of God overcomes the world. —I John 5:4

33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” —John 16:33 NLT

  • Take heart - to have courage, to be courageous. Starting point – We can take heart because we are in him, and he has

    .

  • Don’t just seek to be free from anxiety; grow in

    .

  • Hope -

    expectation of good.

Now may the God of

fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. —Romans 15:13

• Overcomers are

in hope.

19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. —Hebrews 6:19-20

  • Sometimes we don’t know where our anchors are until we face a .

Tests we go through contain two kind of opportunities:
1) the first is a positive, and it’s an opportunity is to learn to

; to grow in hope (the confident expectation of good).
2) The second opportunity is a , and it’s where we learn a lie. This doesn’t necessarily mean that a person lied to you.

How to I grow in hope? How to do I grow in this confident expectation of good?

1. Practical steps.

To the Chief Musician. On a stringed instrument. A Psalm of David.
61 Hear my cry, O God;
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
A strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your tabernacle forever;
I will trust in the shelter of Your wings. Selah —Psalm 61:1-4

a) The

- lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Psalm 61:2
b) The – Who God is. Psalm 61:3 – His nature.
c) The – what I’m deciding to do. Psalm 61:4 – I will abide, I will trust.

2. Cast your cares on Him.

casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. —I Peter 5:7 ESV
7 casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully]. —I Peter 5:7 AMP

Surrender. I’m letting go, not of responsibility, but of unhealthy control. Of trying to do it all on my own.

3. the promises of God.

  • We don’t just need to be emptied of anxiety; we need to be

    with truth.

  • Psalm 1:2 – meditate on the word, day and night; you will prosper.

  • If you know how to

, you already know how to meditate. You just need to change what you are mindful of.

  • Truth

us with courage. Lies fill us with fear. We need truth-filled hearts.

For

the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. —Jeremiah 29:11

And

that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. —Romans 8:28

  • You only have a testimony because you’ve been through a !

13 When the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their desire, putting out to sea, they sailed close by Crete. 14 But not long after, a tempestuous head wind arose, called Euroclydon. —Acts 27:13-14

Acts 27 - Characteristics of Storms

  1. RELENTLESS - wave after wave after wave.

  2. LOSS OF CONTROL.

  3. They were “exceedingly tossed with tempest”, taking a VIOLENT BATTERING in the storm. The storms of life can have a tremendous

    impact.

  4. Re-prioritization. The started throwing overboard the things that just were not needed.

  5. NO ABILITY TO NAVIGATE. A feeling of helplessness, confusion, being utterly lost.

    • With Christ you are NEVER WITHOUT , in the midst of a storm. God is the God of hope.
