Scripture | Matthew 6:19-24

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. —Matthew 6:19-24 (NIV)

Notes

Three realities to hold closely

  1. Earthly treasure will (v. 19-20)

  2. Earthly treasure may cause (v. 21-25)

  3. Earthly treasure may prevent you from (v. 24)

Study Guide

Open
Read Matthew 6:19-24 and pray for your time together.

Discuss

  1. What challenged you, encouraged you, or stood out to you in this weekend’s message?

  2. Why do you think it is that we seek earthly treasure even when we know it is temporary?

  3. What do you think it means to “lay up” treasure in heaven?

  4. We often think that wherever our heart is, that is where our treasure will be. Jesus says in this passage that it works the opposite way around. Why do you think this is? What difference does this make to the way you view wealth and consider your priorities?

  5. Why do you think that Jesus says a person cannot serve both God and money? How can a person know which of these they are serving?

  6. Do you think this passage is merely teaching delayed gratification? If something more, what is the big takeaway of Jesus’ teaching?

  7. How will you live differently because of what Jesus teaches here?
