Day 124 - The Breath of Life

Paulette Baker

“Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.” - Genesis 2:7 NLT

Yesterday, we discussed how humans are made in the image of God. You and I are proof that God exists because we reflect His identity! However, what sets us apart from the rest of creation as proof of God is the breath of life God breathed into us.

The spirit of God Himself is the very breath (or spirit in the original language) that gives us life. This “breath of life” is the life-giving breath we breathe daily. More than that, this “breath” gives life to our spiritual beings, not just our physical bodies. Remember how John 3:16 says that we will have eternal life through Jesus? Our earthly lives are supported by the breath in our lungs, but our eternal lives are supported by the breath of life God breathed into our spirits! This breath and spirit are reserved for humans, those made in the image of God, because He is everlasting and alive!

As long as we’re breathing, we have life; and thanks to God’s breath of life, our spirits will live forever with Him. Life, here on earth and in heaven, is proof that God exists!

Next Steps

  • Think about it: How are humans different from other living things?

  • Think about it: Some people reference being saved as being “born again.” Considering what you know about the “breath of life” and our spiritual life as humans, how would you explain the concept of salvation as being “born again”?

  • Action Step: Take five deep breaths. Thank God that He put breath in your lungs and that you have eternal life through Jesus!
