1 Corinthians 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife.

  1. Lots of divisions (Chapter 1-4)

  2. Confusion about Sex and Romance (Chapters 5-7)

  3. Questions about differences of personal convictions. (Chapters 9 -10)

  4. Charismatic Chaos in Services. (Chapters 11-14)

  5. Minimized Jesus Resurrection (Chapter 15)

    • 5:2 - You’re arrogant about it

    • Your boasting is not good.

    • There is a sexual immorality that exists in the world. But the church should be different than the world.

1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

  • You can’t claim the forgiveness and grace of Jesus and then repeatedly and rebelliously live the lifestyle that put Jesus on the cross.

  • “Corinthianize” was a verb.

  • We identify the problem and apply the gospel.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  • Washed

  • Sanctified

  • Justified

  • You’ve been declared righteous and re-deemed.

  • Re-deemed

1 Corinthians 6:12-13
12“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  • 2-part life about sex

  • Sex is just physical, and what happens with my body doesn’t affect my soul.

  • There is something about the way God designed sex that connects the body and the soul.

1 Corinthians 6:14-17
14By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.” 17But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

  • Paul starts talking about the resurrection of Jesus and our bodies.

  • Resurrecting Christ’s physical body shows that God cares about our physical bodies.

1 Corinthians 6:13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

  • Two becoming one flesh

1 Corinthians 6:18-20
18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  • Your body matters and you should use it to honor God.

    1. Against God

    2. Against the Person

  • When you use someone sexually to only fill the physical desires you have you train yourself to reduce people to objects and commodities.

    3, Against yourself

  • Flee because you’re filled with the Spirit

1 Corinthians 6:18-20
18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  • Flee away from sexual sin and flee toward Jesus.

  • You need the power of the Holy Spirit in you to live a life that honors God.

1 Corinthians 6:20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

  • There’s more forgiveness and grace in Jesus than there is sin and shame in you.
