THE GREAT SUSTAINER

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved. —Psalms 55:22

HE SUSTAINS US WITH THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH

SUSTAINER DEFINED:
ONE WHO GIVES SUPPORT AND RELIEF THROUGH RESCUE OF THE WEAK.
ONE WHO SUPPLIES “CONSTANT” SUSTENANCE AND NOURISHMENT.
ONE WHO SUPPORTS THE WEIGHT OF ANOTHER, TO PROP UP, TO BEAR UP UNDER.
ONE WHO BUOYS UP WITH HOPE.

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2  By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
3  and every spirit that does not confess [a]that Jesus [b]Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
4  You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
5  They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the world hears them.
6  We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. —1 John 4:1 - 6

1 Beloved, do not put faith in every spirit, but prove (test) the spirits to discover whether they proceed from God; for many false prophets have gone forth into the world.
2  By this you may know (perceive and recognize) the Spirit of God: every spirit which acknowledges and confesses [the fact] that Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [actually] has become man and has come in the flesh is of God [has God for its source];
3  And every spirit which does not acknowledge and confess that Jesus
Christ has come in the flesh[but would annul, destroy, sever, disunite Him] is not of God [does not proceed from Him]. This [nonconfession] is the [spirit] of the antichrist, [of] which you heard that it was coming, and now it is already in the world.
4  Little children, you are of God [you belong to Him] and have [already] defeated and overcome them [the agents of the antichrist], because He Who lives in you is greater (mightier) than he who is in the world.
5  They proceed from the world and are of the world; therefore it is out of the world [its whole economy morally considered] that they speak, and the world listens (pays attention) to them.
6  We are [children] of God. Whoever is learning to know God [progressively to perceive, recognize, and understand God by observation and experience, and to get an ever-clearer knowledge of Him] listens to us; and he who is not of God does not listen or pay attention to us. By this we know (recognize) the Spirit of Truth and the spirit of error. —1 John 4:1 - 6 (AMPC)

1. The Spirit of error is exposed by its fruit.

They are of the world. Therefore they speak
as of the world, and the world hears them. —1 John 4:5

They proceed from the world and are of the world; therefore it is out of the world [its whole economy morally considered] that they speak, and the world listens (pays attention) to them. —1 John 4:5 (AMPC)

For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. —1 John 2:16

For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one’s own resources or in the stability of earthly things]—these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]. —1 John 2:16 (AMPC)

No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. —Matthew 6:24

8  For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. —Galatians 6:8 - 9

And because lawlessness will abound,
the love of many will grow cold. —Matthew 24:12

Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you]. —Romans 12:2 (AMPC)

2. The Spirit of Truth will sustain you through the ever-growing knowledge of His voice.

We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. —1 John 4:6

We are [children] of God. —1 John 4:6 (AMPC)

1  I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, he who does not enter by the door into the sheepfold, but climbs up some other way (elsewhere, from some other quarter) is a thief and a robber.
2  But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3  The watchman opens the door for this man, and the sheep listen to his voice and heed it; and he calls his own sheep by name and brings (leads) them out.
4  When he has brought his own sheep outside, he walks on before them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
5  They will never [on any account] follow a stranger, but will run away from him because they do not know the voice of strangers or recognize their call.
6  Jesus used this parable (illustration) with them, but they did not understand what He was talking about.
7  So Jesus said again, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that I Myself am the Door for the sheep.
8  All others who came [as such] before Me are thieves and robbers, but the [true] sheep did not listen to and obey them.
9  I am the Door; anyone who enters in through Me will be saved (will live). He will come in and he will go out [freely], and will find pasture.
10  The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).
11  I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd risks and lays down His [own] life for the sheep.
12  But the hired servant (he who merely serves for wages) who is neither the shepherd nor the owner of the sheep, when he sees the wolf coming, deserts the flock and runs away. And the wolf chases and snatches them and scatters [the flock].
13  Now the hireling flees because he merely serves for wages and is not himself concerned about the sheep [cares nothing for them].
14  I am the Good Shepherd; and I know and recognize My own, and My own know and recognize Me —John 10:1 - 14 (AMPC)

4  “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?
5  And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.
6  And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7  I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. —Luke 15:4 - 7
