Judgment Against Nations
The Sword of the Lord
Part of The Book of Jeremiah
June 29, 2023

If the spirit of the world condones it, the Spirit of God condemns it.

Jeremiah 46:1
The word of the Lord which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the nations.

Against Egypt (Jeremiah 46:2). Against the Philistines (Jeremiah 47:1). Against Moab (Jeremiah 48:1). Against the Ammonites (Jeremiah 49:1). Against Edom (v7). Against Damascus (v23). Against Kedar and against the kingdoms of Hazor (v28). Against Elam (v34).

Those who set themselves against God’s Word have done so to their own demise.

Jeremiah 47:6-7
“O you sword of the Lord, how long until you are quiet? Put yourself up into your scabbard, rest and be still! 7 How can it be quiet, seeing the Lord has given it a charge against Ashkelon and against the seashore? There He has appointed it.”

The Word of God is a bomb and a balm. It blows up lies and it binds up wounds.

Jeremiah 46:25-26
25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring punishment on Amon of No, and Pharaoh and Egypt, with their gods and their kings—Pharaoh and those who trust in him. 26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and the hand of his servants…

Those who reject the God of the Bible will inevitably end up in bondage to babel.

Jeremiah 48:42
And Moab shall be destroyed as a people, because he exalted himself against the Lord.

Touching God’s people is equivalent to touching God Himself.

Jeremiah 46:27-28
27 “But do not fear, O My servant Jacob, and do not be dismayed, O Israel! For behold, I will save you from afar, and your offspring from the land of their captivity; Jacob shall return, have rest and be at ease; no one shall make him afraid. 28 Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the Lord, “For I am with you; for I will make a complete end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but I will not make a complete end of you. I will rightly correct you, for I will not leave you wholly unpunished.”

Jeremiah 46:25-26
Afterward it shall be inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.

Truth does not bring division as much as it brings separation.

Discussion Questions

  1. What is one litmus test to help the believer see whether or not God condemns something? (See Luke 16:15)

  2. The phrase “the sword” or the “sword of the Lord” shows up in every chapter of God’s judgment against the nations. How can we view “the sword of the Lord” in our own lives and in our own nation? (See Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6:17)

  3. Discuss this quote: “The Word of God is a bomb and a balm. It blows up lies and it binds up wounds.”

  4. How is touching God’s people equivalent to touching God Himself? (See Acts 9:4)

  5. Read Matthew 10:34-36 and discuss the implications of what Jesus meant when He said, “I did not come to bring peace but a sword.”
