1. Read Romans 7:1-3a; Matthew 19:1-6
i. Who is Paul speaking of when he says, “for I speak to those who know the law?”
ii. Why is adultery reprehensible to God?
2. Read Matthew 19:7-9
i. The Pharisees cite Moses as their authority for allowing divorce; why is Jesus’ response so important? Is God inconsistent between the Old and New Testaments; did He change His mind? How do we reconcile this?
ii. What does Jesus say is the “only” reason for divorce?
iii. Why do you suppose many church leaders add to this exception today?
3. Read Matthew 18:15-19; 1 Corinthians 5:9-11; 13
a. One of the most common exceptions today’s church leaders makes is a divorce in response to abuse. What does Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:15-19 teach us about a more biblical approach to an abuse situation?
b. In the NKJV, Paul uses the word “reviler” amongst a list of sins. This word can also be translated as “abusive person.” In verse 13, what does Paul say the church should do to the unrepentant person?
c. Why is it so difficult to separate from “the evil person?”
