Elders: Character & Care

1 Timothy 3:1-7 ESV

New Testament churches were led by a

of elders (teaching & ruling) who were responsible for shepherding the flock of God, guarding sound doctrine, equipping the saints for ministry, and providing hospitality as for the church.

Proverbial Quote: “He who would play a leader’s part, on a

Godly men should aspire to be elders who are:
above reproach = free of

sin
the husband of one wife = model a godly marriage (__single? )
sober-minded = of needs and of danger
self-controlled = is a trusted
respectable = and well-mannered
hospitable = advances the gospel by loving
able to teach = apply God’s Word to a person’s
not a drunkard = not by alcohol
not violent but gentle = sympathetic, kind, and
not quarrelsome = constant paralyzes ministry
not a lover of money = a trusted and generous
manage his household well = a supervisor and
keep his children submissive = a of respect for “Dad”
not a recent convert = by spiritual triumphs and trials
well thought of by outsiders = public matter

Responding to this passage:
1. The Holy Spirit calls and qualifies an elder. Be

for those who are entrusted to oversee your soul.
2. Elders are not perfect. Be reasonable in understanding their responsibilities and when they let you down.
3. Satan is constantly attacking. for your elders and their families for wisdom, humility, and courage.
