Beatitudes
- Comes from Latin word Beatus which means “blessed, happy”
- It is not a temporary or circumstantial feeling of happiness.
- It is an ongoing state of well-being in relationship to God that belongs to those who follow and respond to Jesus’ ministry.
Conduct follows Character
Attitude is the application of our character
The Beatitudes contain 3 areas of character application. (Matthew 5:3-12)
1. Your Inward Attitude
Beatitude #1 (v. 3)
- Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
- The Kingdom of Heaven
Beatitude #2 (v. 4)
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
- Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Beatitude #3 (v. 5)
- Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
- Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is power under control.
2. Your Upward Attitude
Beatitude #4 (v. 6)
- Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

- Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

3. Your Outward Attitude
Beatitude #5 (v. 7)
- Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.

Beatitude #7 (v. 9)
- Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

Beatitude #8 (v. 10-12)
- Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
