Title: Silent Symbols That Speak
Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-25
Date: June 11, 2023
Introduction: From its beginning the church has used symbols. A dove represents the Holy Spirit. First-century Christians used the image of a fish and the word fish as an acronym for “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.” Numerous churches utilize banners with Biblical images cast in symbolic form. The best known is the cross, signifying the death of Christ.
Symbolism is at the heart of the observance of the Lord’s Supper. Baptist view the two elements used in the observance, the fruit of the vine and the bread, as symbolic; that is, they represent something beyond themselves. Jesus said, in our text for today, that they represent His body and His blood. So, the two elements of the Lord’s Supper are silent symbols that speak. What do they say? They proclaim three truths. First, they say to us as God’s people.
