Greatest Thing Ever Said- Week 2- Sermon Notes
January 14, 2023

Here is what I want to really help uncover for you all today:

What will my life COUNT FOR?
What will my life BE ABOUT?

How can I not miss out on purpose?
How can I make sure I don’t miss out on leaving a legacy that outlasts my life?

Many of us have similar priorities:

GOD| FAMILY | HEALTH | SCHOOL| FINANCES | INFLUENCE OTHERS|

But we MAKE them more important because it’s what we DO first.

NETFLIX | SOCIAL MEDIA| BORED EATING| GOLF| VIDEO GAMES| SHOPPING for THINGS we CAN’T AFFORD

The Key to getting things done isn’t just adding…it’s PRIORITIZATION.

You take the things that you’ve said are most important and put it first.

So what should go first?
Jesus actually helps us answer this very question.

Matthew 6:19-24

19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

What Are Treasures in Heaven?

What did HEAVEN treasure?
What did HEAVEN pay for?
What Price?
What Cost?
What did it hope to GAIN for its PURCHASE?

For God so LOVED the WORLD that He GAVE.

He invites us to TREASURE The things HE TREASURES → YOU and anyone who doesn’t KNOW that HE LOVES THEM!

So the Treasure of Heaven was Jesus, the one and only Son Of God.

And Heaven emptied itself of its treasure…in order to accomplish the treasure of God’s Heart.
Which was this:

Luke 19:10 “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

21-where your treasure is, your heart will be also.

The Treasures of Heaven are NOT:

Things, vacation homes
Your investment portfolio
Your boat, gas, or your golf game
Not STATUS, or a SYMBOL or wealth, but people!

We see it like this:

What will I have to show for it?
What will I have to show for it?

Jesus asks us a better question:
Who will you have to show for it?

22 The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light.

23(a) But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness.

In Hebrew, having a good eye =’ayin tovah’ = being generous”

Bad Eye = ‘ayin ra’ah’ = Being stingy.

He is letting us know that He wants our hearts to store up TREASURES of HEAVEN.

23(b): If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Jesus connects a great darkness inside of us to being STINGY.
And then…
He Connects a great LIGHT within US =GENEROUS.

24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

He is warning us of the DANGERS of Materialism-
That part of us that NEVER has enough, HATES giving what we think is OURS to someone else, and SPENDS SO MUCH ENERGY trying to GET

The Treasure of heaven: Jesus wanted to make sure others heard about salvation and healing of their soul.

The first thing we need to do is RE-PRIORITIZE.

Most people live their life this way:

Spend 1st: my immediate needs and wants.
SAVE 2nd: My future and my family
THEY GIVE LAST: God and Others.

If you can’t enjoy what you currently have, you will be disappointed when you SPEND money to GET more things and find out you’re STILL unhappy.

There are people who have less than you that are
happier than you are.

This is because they have conditioned their heart differently than you.

Generosity is NOT a money issue.
It is a HEART issue.

Generous people are generous.

GENEROSITY ISN’T AN INCOME LEVEL- it’s a LIGHT THAT SHINES FROM INSIDE THE HEART.

EARN all you can | So you can SAVE all you can| So you can GIVE all you can.

Earning is not the issue.
How we handle what we earn is the issue.

God’s order:

First give- Worship and Generosity.
Everything comes after that.

What is the cost of a soul to you?

Who do you want to make sure ends up in heaven?

Jesus himself, He gave most and He asks us to do the same.

He knew what your soul costs

He wants you to consider the cost of the others in this city…and when you give this way, you’ll be storing up treasures in heaven.
