Rich and Wise
Text: Luke 12:13-21 (NKJV)
13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
14 But He said to him, “Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?” 15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’ 18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
21 “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
Today we will be talking about being rich and wise.
Right here in this passage is a profound parable that Jesus teaches a man about greed, covetousness, and handling treasure and wealth.
We will also talk about a rich man that Jesus calls a
We want to look at what made him a fool, and what we can do to avoid repeating his behavior in oder to walk in blessing before God.
Intro - The Two brothers
Luke speaks of these two brothers arguing, where one of the brothers stops Jesus and asks him…
13… “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
*If you will be blessed, you will need to learn how to avoid the life mentioned in the following parable. *

The Story of the Rich Fool
The Rich Man
Here we see this parable that Jesus begins to tell about a rich man that
This man was rich
- This means that he
- This means he had an
- This means he has intelligence
- This means that he had success
-
What is also important about this man was that he was more than RICH; Jesus called him a fool.
What made him foolish?
1- He
16 Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. 17 And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no room to store my crops?’
This man was presented with a problem within his
But as he is looking for how to solve this problem, he CONSULTS himself.
Instead of seeking the mind of God, he thought within himself, and this is the start down the road of Foolishness.

2 He Created His Own Plan
18 So he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will store all my crops and my goods.
This man was foolish because not only did he consult himself, but he then went on to

3 - Because He Considered Himself An Owner
19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, YOU have many goods laid up for many years
Jesus said it was foolish for this man to have such a notion. And this is the very thing that gets us all in trouble.
Benefits of Ownership:
When you are the owner of a thing
- You consult yourself
- You create your own plans
Downsides to Ownership:
- You have to provide
- You have to MAKE IT HAPPEN through
- Much stress
- Less sleep
- Unwanted striving
The man was foolish, because he looked at himself as the OWNER and not a steward.
4 - He
19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.”
The rich man began to trust in his possessions as if they secured him.

5 - He Failed To Consecrate His Soul
20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
The description of his foolishness is here:
- You have stored up all of this stuff…now that you are dying, who will receive any of it?
This is the foolishness of this man
The blessing that God wants to give you is meant to bless you AND OTHERS, but this man, made it only about him
The rich man built it all for himself and Jesus called him foolish, because he wasted his life being unprofitable for the Kingdom of God.
20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’
