Verse 4 Provides Three Gurantees Everyone Can Count On:
1. The guarantee that
Means: deep, oppressive, lonely, pit-black darkness
“My face has grown red with weeping, and darkness covers my eyes.” Job 16:16
“Are my days not few? Stop it! Leave me alone, so that I can smile a little before I go to a land of darkness and gloom, never to return. It is a land of blackness like the deepest darkness, gloomy and chaotic, where even the light is like the darkness.” Job 10:21-22
“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33) ~ Jesus
2. The guarantee that God has promised to
Means: together with, close by, connected to
“…the God of my father has been with me.” (Genesis 31:5) ~ Jacob
“Stay with me. Don’t be araid, for the one who wants to take my life wants to take your life.You will be safe with me.” (1 Samuel 22:23) ~ David to Abiathar the priest
“I will build an altar…to the God who answered me in my day of distress. He has been with me
everywhere I have gone.” (Genesis 35:5) ~ Jacob
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5) ~ Jesus
3. The guarentee that when life is the darkest, every believer can count on the
Rod: Represents - the shepherd’s strength, power, authority and defense
Symbolizes - the Bible
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuke, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping your word. I have sought you with all my heart; don’t let me wander from your commands. I have treasured your word in my heart so that I may not sin against you.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“I will make you pass under the rod…” Ezekial 20:37
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalm 139:23-24
“It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) ~ Jesus to Satan
Staff: Represents – concern, care, compassion, and most of all, comfort
Symbolizes – the Holy Spirit
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor (Comforter) to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. When the Counselor (Comforter) comes, the one I will send to you from the Father – the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father – he will testify about me. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” (John 15:16; 26; 13a) ~ Jesus
