Day 107 - The Advantages of Companionship

Emily Green

“I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun. 8 This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, “Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing. 9 Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” - Ecclesiastes 4:7-12 NLT

The past two weeks, we’ve discussed the importance of mentor and mentee relationships, which is a crucial part of godly community. This week, we’re talking about building healthy friendships with peers: people on the same level as us in some way (both, for example, being parents of preschoolers or empty nesters or in the first year as a new believer) and with whom we can learn and grow together.

The title for today’s entry comes from the title of the passage in Ecclesiastes 4 in the New Living Translation. The writer sees that life without companionship is “meaningless and depressing” (Ecclesiastes 4:8). The only way to have a successful life is to be in community with others. This is the advantage of companionship!

Alone, we are vulnerable; together, however, we are powerful. When one falls down, another can help him up. When one is sad, another can cheer her up. When one doesn’t know how to proceed, another can help guide and direct him. When you invest in godly community and friendships, you will enjoy the blessings of godly companionship!
