Pilate had a sign prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. John 19:19

One Week Earlier…

The great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the king of Israel!” John 12:12,13

This has been Jesus’ theme for three years…

Kingdoms of this world || Kingdom of God:

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” …Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is not of this world.” John 18:33,36

“If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.” John 19:12b

“Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered. John 19:15

Two questions this story forces me to ask:

1. Who is my

?

2. What is my

?

REFLECTION & DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. Read John 12:12-19. What stood out to you this weekend as you studied the triumphal entry? Why do you think the people switched so quickly from hailing Jesus in John 12 to ready to crucify him in John 19?
  2. Let’s look at this story from the perspective of another gospel. Read Matthew 21:1-11. What role did the triumphal entry play in Christ’s journey to the cross?
  3. How do you see a Kingdoms of this World attitude sneaking into your thinking and life? Which of the Kingdom of God characteristics do you most want to build into your life?
  4. Read Zechariah 9:9. In his triumphal entry, Jesus is fulfilling the prophecy from Zechariah. How should the truth that Jesus is King impact how you live your life today?
