Message Notes
If our learning of the Bible doesn’t compel us to live more faithfully, we are living in religion not a relationship with Jesus.
Jesus is incredible, and He’s worth following with your whole life.
“And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.” —Mark 7:24
Focus #1 in this story - The heart of the religious leaders (with their man made rules) and the heart of an unnamed gentile woman.
Jesus leaves the area he is in for two reasons…
- To take his disciples away to specifically teach them a lesson
“And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, ‘Then are you also without understanding?’….And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. —Mark 7:17-18,24
- To make a specific statement about himself and his mission.
The Bible is written by real people, in real places, at real times.
“And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.” —Mark 7:24
“Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” —1 Kings 17:9
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.” —Malachi 4:5-6
“But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.” —Mark 7:31-34
“And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, ‘Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.’” —Matthew 15:22
Focus #2 - Jesus is declaring the one after Elijah has arrived.
“But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.” —Luke 4:25-26
“She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. And he said to her, ‘Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.’ But she answered him, ‘Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.’” —Mark 7:26-28
“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.’” —John 6:35
Focus #3 - Jesus displays everyone is welcome in the family of God.
Focus #4 - Jesus alone holds the power to deliver us from evil.
Deliverance = denotes something that happens such as you could not have made
“And he said to her, ‘For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.’” —Mark 7:29
“Then Jesus answered her, ‘O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.’ And her daughter was healed instantly.” —Matthew 15:28
“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.” —Matthew 11:21-22
“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” —1 John 1:5
People walking in the deepest darkness are the people who need the greatest deliverance only Jesus can bring.
