Zechariah 9:9-13 (ESV)
[9] Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. [10] I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. [11] As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. [12] Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. [13] For I have bent Judah as my bow; I have made Ephraim its arrow. I will stir up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and wield you like a warrior’s sword.

Sovereignty of God

• Zechariah 1:2-6 - [2] “The LORD was very angry with your fathers. [3] Therefore say to them, Thus declares the LORD of hosts: Return to me, says the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts. [4] Do not be like your fathers, to whom the former prophets cried out, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, Return from your evil ways and from your evil deeds.’ But they did not hear or pay attention to me, declares the LORD. [5] Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever? [6] But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not overtake your fathers? So they repented and said, ‘As the LORD of hosts purposed to deal with us for our ways and deeds, so has he dealt with us.’”

DISCUSSION
1. Was there anything in this study that really grabbed your attention or stirred your spirit?
2. Have you ever felt like God had forgotten about you?
What did you do?
Where can you turn in Scripture for reassurance?
3. The call to repentance is foundational to our faith walk. How would you explain this to a seeker or a new believer?
How do you understand the life of drawing near to God?
4. Working together can be difficult. Why is it important to surrender to the Spirit rather than rely on might or power? (Zechariah 4:6; Ephesians 4:1-4)
5. The term “prisoner of hope” is unique to Zechariah. How would you understand or explain that phrase?
6. How can your group pray for you?
