1 Peter 1:22 (ESV): Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
- Love is produced in your obedience
3 questions:
- Who is being commanded to love?
- How are we to love?
- Who do we love?
Who is being commanded to love?
1 Peter 1:22 (ESV): Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
1 Peter 1:23 (ESV): since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
1 John 3:16–18 (ESV): By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 17 But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? 18 Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
1 John 4:7–8 (ESV): Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
The point: The only people who can love like this, are a people who have been loved like this.
How do we love?
1 Peter 1:22 (ESV): Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
Sincere - connected to truth
Earnestly - to stretch to the limit of a muscles capacity
Who are we to love?
John 13:34–35 (ESV): A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
