“I forgot that you existed…”

Unfortunately, we cannot forget that trauma exists.

How do we begin to heal from trauma?

Trauma: Response to a Deeply Distressing Event

The Apostle Paul experienced trauma.

2 Corinthians 11:23–27

23 …I have worked harder, been put in

more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again. 24 Five different times the Jewish leaders gave me thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole night and a day adrift at sea.

26 I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger from rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in the deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. 27 I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty and have often gone

food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.

Some of Paul’s Trauma:

  1. Prison multiple times
  2. Beaten/Physically abused multiple times
  3. Stoned
  4. Shipwrecked three times
  5. Day adrift at sea
  6. Faced dangers from robbers, bandits, and others
  7. Gone without food
  8. Exposed to the elements without sufficient clothing

2 Corinthians 1:8-9

8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far

our ability to endure, so that we of life itself. 9 Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death.

How do we begin to heal from trauma?

1. Accept help and support from others.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 …God is our merciful Father and the

of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

Galatians 6:2

one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

2. Tell the truth about what happened.

John 8:32

Then you will know the

and the truth will set you free.

2 Corinthians 1:8-9

8 …about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we

we would never live through it. 9 In fact, we to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God…

3. Waste no energy on revenge.

Romans 8:6

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Do I want to be bitter or do I want to be better?

Romans 12:19

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

4. Pursue purpose in your pain.

2 Corinthians 1:4

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.

“Trauma may or may not be your fault… but pursuing God for healing your opportunity.”
