How to Use My Hurts to Help Others

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us. 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 NLT

Three truths God teaches us in our pain:

• I learn to

on God

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through … In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead. 2 Corinthians 1:8–9 NLT

• I learn to trust and obey

Before I suffered, I took the wrong way, but now I do what you say. Psalm 119:67 CEB

My suffering was good for me, for it taught me to pay attention to your decrees. Psalm 119:71 NLT

• I learn I

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 NIV

3) I can share how God is

out of my pain

And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. Philippians 1:12 NLT

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28 NLT

4) I can share how God is

in my pain

God saved us from these great dangers of death, and he will continue to save us. We have put our hope in him, and he will save us again. 2 Corinthians 1:10 NCV

When you are in trouble, call out to me. I will answer and be there to protect and honor you. Psalm 91:15 CEV

And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. 1 Peter 3:15 NLT

Will my

include serving others through my pain?

Memory Verse

Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways. Proverbs 20:30 GNT

Next Steps

• I will make a list of what I have learned through my pain and use it as a source of thanksgiving.

• I will make a list of those around me who might be hurting, begin praying for them, and look for an opportunity to encourage.
