For Thine Is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, for Ever. Amen.
Dr. Mark Foster
Part of The Lord's Prayer
April 10, 2022

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. —Matthew 6:9-13

Introduction

There are

different endings to the Lord’s prayer in various manuscripts.

Week 1: “Our Father” is the loving God of

people throughout all time.

Heaven is where what God wants done is done. —Dallas Willard

Our lives either

or desecrate God’s name.

Week 2: “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

“Thy will be done” means “Whatever you want God, we place our wills

your will.”

Week 3: “Give us this day our daily bread.”

Give us a

for you and your will that all your children have enough to eat.

Week 4: Forgive us our sins, debts, and/or trespasses,

also have forgiven those who owe us.

Give us your grace to forgive the unforgivable in ourselves and others to live in the

of your heaven.

Week 5: “And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.”

Save us from the time of tribulation before the

of time, and keep us safe from and the devil.

Sometimes our greatest

is to not do anything at all when God is calling us to act.

My Additional Notes:

The Kingdom

Today is Palm Sunday, when we are reminded that Jesus is

! (Zechariah 9:9)

His is the

, help me to live like it. (Matthew 6:13)

The true saint burns grace like a 747 burns fuel on takeoff. —Dallas Willard

You may have learned grace is unmerited favor and total forgiveness, and it is—and much

.

Grace is God’s

acting in your life to accomplish what you cannot accomplish on your own.

My Additional Notes:

The Power

His is the

, help me to to it. (1 Chronicles 29:10-11)

There is [a] deep connection…between praying and living justly in the world: being the kind of mature human being who is not trapped by selfishness, fear of others, anxiety about the future or the desire to succeed at others’ expense. —Rowan Williams

It takes a power

than ourselves, beyond gritting our teeth, to live into Christ-likeness. (1 Chronicles 29:12-13)

How are you using the power God has given you?

My Additional Notes:

The Glory

His is the

, help me to live for glory not my glory. (Psalm 115:1)

Glory belongs to God. We either obscure God’s glory, or we reflect it and magnify it. —Adam Hamilton

Forever in Greek literally means “into the ages” or “for the eons.” An eon is equal to a

years.

You may have heard “

lasts forever,” but Jesus’ kingdom, power, and glory do last forever.

We are unceasing spiritual beings with an eternal destiny in God’s great universe. —Dallas Willard

Therefore, who we are

is the most important thing about us.

This prayer is meant to train and prepare us for the forever that lies ahead. —Adam Hamilton

God’s forever kingdom is already

and is still to come. (Revelation 21:3-5)

Amen is a Hebrew word that means, “So be it!” or “May it be so!” or “I

.” or “Yes!”

My Additional Notes:

Action Step

Paraphrase the Lord’s prayer in your own words, reflecting on what it is to pray “our and us,” and

“my and mine” to “Thy and Thine.”
