How we respond to problems matters
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23
“For the wages of sin is death” Romans 6:23
“But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” Romans 10:9
Common responses to problems
- Controlling behaviors: Demanding perfection from others, feeling entitled
- Achieving behaviors: “Workaholic”, obsessively busy/can’t sit still
- Isolation behaviors: Withdrawing, zoning out, disassociating
- People Pleasing behaviors: Keeping everybody happy, codependent relationships, easily exploited
Character: Moral excellence and firmness
“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” Romans 5:1-5
Suffering -> Perseverance -> Character -> Hope ->
Perseverance: The continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition
“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” Galatians 5:22-23
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1: 2-5
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
