Jesus talked about money
Jesus never
The ministry of Jesus was supported by the
“Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.” —Luke 8:3
“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that
though he was rich…” —2 Corinthians 8:9a“…yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” —2 Corinthians 8:9b
“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” —Acts 20:35
The
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” —Matthew 6:24
“Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me!” —Luke 12:13
For this man money is more important than
“Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you? Then he said to them “Watch out! “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions. The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops. This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry. But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself? This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” —Luke 12:14-21
We become rich towards God when we give to that which
You don’t start a life of generosity someday- you begin
Small Group Questions
- Introduce yourself. Where do you live and what do you do for a living?
- How did you end up attending CenterPoint?
- Did you grow up in a religious home or is church something that is new to you?
The messages from the last two Sundays have been about the spiritual habits that support our spiritual growth. Would you say that you find self-discipline comes easy for you, or do you prefer to go with the flow?
Read Luke 18:9-14
“To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everyone else, Jesus told this parable. “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” —Luke 18:9-14
Why does the motivation for giving and the different things that people do religiously matter so much to Jesus?
Read 1 John 4:10-
“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” —1 John 4:10
- What would be the difference between living a life where our motivation is to…
Love God so that God would love us.
Love God because He first loved us.
