MARK 15:33-41

And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
40 There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

I. Jesus bears the

on our behalf.

II. The death of Jesus

us to the Father.

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us.

How deep the Father’s love for us. How vast beyond all measure.
That He should give His only Son to make a wretch His treasure.
How great the pain of searing loss. The Father turns His face away.
As wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory.
Behold the man upon a cross. My sin upon His shoulders.
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers.
It was my sin that held Him there I until it was accomplished.
His dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished.
I will not boast in anything. No gifts, no power, no wisdom.
But I will boast in Jesus Christ. His death and resurrection.
Why should I gain from His reward? I cannot give an answer.
But this I know with all my heart. His wounds have paid my ransom.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  3. Have you ever been misunderstood for being a follower of Jesus?

  4. In your own words, how would you explain to someone that the death of Jesus accomplished that which we cannot do for ourselves?

  5. Do you have confidence in the assurance of your salvation?  Are there any things that cause you to doubt that assurance? What verses can you find in your Bible that speak to those doubts?

  6. The death of Jesus has forever done away with the barrier we once had with God. Are there any barriers in your life that keep you from consistently spending time in the presence of God?
