2 Samuel 22:1-51

22:1-51 | This song is almost identical to Psalm 18. It was most likely written after David’s victories in 2 Samuel 8 and before his sin with Bathsheba (1 Kgs. 15:5). Images of God as rock, fortress, and shield abound in this psalm of triumph that portrays David as the warrior king. Only two verses, 5 & 6, focus on the dangers, and the rest dwell on God’s deliverance.

22:28 | This verse is reminiscent of the themes found in Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel 2. God in His sovereignty creates reversals in human experience, exalting the poor and humble and bringing down the proud.

22:35 | A bow made of bronze would be heavy and difficult to use but very powerful. David attributes his strength in battle to God’s help.
