Quenching and Grieving
“Do not quench the Spirit.” —1 Thessalonians 5:19
Ignore the Holy Spirit.
Limiting spiritual gifts.
Misuse or abuse of spiritual gifts.
Misrepresent the Holy Spirit.
Quenching the Holy Spirit is not doing something He would have us to do.
“14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.” —1 Timothy 4:14
“30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” —Ephesians 4:30
Grieving the Holy Spirit is doing something that He has not led us to do.
Negative speech.
Uncontrolled emotions.
Habitual and unconfessed Sin.
“31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:31-32
God desires to work through us by the Holy Spirit.
“38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” —John 7:38-39
