The Time Traveler

Daniel Chapter 7 & 8

Psalm 107: 1-3 (NLT):
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!
His faithful love endures forever.
2 Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out!
Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.
3 For he has gathered the exiles from many lands,
from east and west, from north and south.

Psalm 107: 43 (NLT):
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord.

“The six former chapters of this book were historical; we now enter with fear and trembling upon the six latter, which are prophetical, wherein are many things dark and hard to be understood, which we dare not positively determine the sense of, and yet many things plain and profitable, which I trust God will enable us to make good use of.”
(Matthew Henry’s Commentary, vol. 4, p. 839)

1. How Far Will We Go

Daniel 7: 1-3:
1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel saw a dream and visions of his head as he lay in his bed. Then he wrote down the dream and told the sum of the matter. 2 Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another.

2. What We Find There

Daniel 7: 4- 8:
4 The first was like a lion and had eagles’ wings. Then as I looked its wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up from the ground and made to stand on two feet like a man, and the mind of a man was given to it. 5 And behold, another beast, a second one, like a bear. It was raised up on one side. It had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and it was told, ‘Arise, devour much flesh.’ 6 After this I looked, and behold, another, like a leopard, with four wings of a bird on its back. And the beast had four heads, and dominion was given to it. 7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong. It had great iron teeth; it devoured and broke in pieces and stamped what was left with its feet. It was different from all the beasts that were before it, and it had ten horns. 8 I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. And behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

3. Let’s Visit Father Time

The Ancient of Days

Daniel 7: 9-12
9 “As I looked, thrones were placed,
and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames;
its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued
and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.
11 “I looked then because of the sound of the great words that the horn
was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was killed, and its body destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.

The Ancient of Days and His Throne

“The scene presented is one of unspeakable grandeur….We see the great fiery throne; the Judge awful with the dignity of unnumbered ages, attended by a million angels who are ready to do his will; and a hundred million watching and listening spectators.”
(Pulpit Commentary, Vol 13, p.213)

4. Skip to the End

The Son of Man

Daniel 1: 13-14:
13 “I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
that all peoples, nations, and languages
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.

“Son of Man”
- Jesus’ favorite title
- Jesus used it in reference to self 28 times in Gospel of Matthew

Matthew 9: 6: Son of Man can forgive sins
Matthew 8:20: Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head
Matthew 12: 8: Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath
Matthew 20: 28: Son of Man came to serve
Matthew 25: 31: Son of Man will come in glory and sit on his throne

“When people heard Jesus use the term “son of man” for himself, they had to decide which type of “son of man” he was. Technically he was both, but it took faith to believe he was like the “son of man” in Daniel.”- a divine King”
(ESV Study Bible notes for Dan 7:13)

Jesus directly quotes Daniel 7: 13-14

Mark 14: 61-64:
61 But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” 62 And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63 And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64 You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.

5. Your Time is Now

2 Peter 3: 8-11:
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.
11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,
