For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. —Romans 6:23 NIV
Almost as soon as we realize our problem, we immediately begin to feel regret for lying, cheating, using, or anything else.
How many times do I still regret my actions from the past?
“Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. —Hosea 6:1 NIV
This is the part where we feel that we don’t deserve the grace that God is showing us.
Then we come to the hard part -
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. —Philippians 4:6-8 NIV
Renewing is not a matter of determining to change your old ways.
Renewing in the Bible is to have a new element wrought into your inner being.
It is the renewing process that produces the inner tranformation mentioned in Romans 12:2.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. —Romans 12:2 NIV
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. —2 Corinthians 4:16 NIV
